Bermuda Triangle » Flight 19
November 27th, 2007 by admin

But then, about one and one half hours into the trip, something happened. To this day, we cannot explain what it was. At around 3:40 P.M, the radio at the air station in Fort Lauderdale received this strange message from Flight 19:

Lieutenant Taylor: Calling tower. This is an emergency. We seem to be off course. We cannot see land. Repeat. We cannot see land.
Tower: What is your position?
Lieutenant Taylor: We are not sure of our position. We cannot be sure just where we are… We seem to be lost.
Tower: Assume bearing due west.
Lieutenant Taylor: We don’t know which way is west. Everything is wrong.. strange.. We can’t be sure of any direction even the ocean does not look as it should.

Flight 19 was lost. Their compasses had gone crazy. Even the ocean did not look familiar. All direction had been lost. The naval base picked up conversations between pilots, but the tower could no longer reach the planes by radio. Soon, there was no sign of the planes on the radar screen. What had happened to flight 19?

At 4:00 PM, the tower crew heard Taylor turn over the command of Flight 19 to another pilot, Captain Stiver. Why? The five planes stayed together. Captain Stiver reported they all summed to be lost. For hours the planes flew aimlessly in all directions. Then, the very last words of Flight 19 came through. “It looks like we are..” The message was never completed. Some of the tower crew reported hearing one further message, “Entering white water.. We are completely lost.” On the Ground, emergency steps were immediately taken. A number of rescue planes where sent up after Flight 19. One was a giant Martin Mariner a seaplane with a crew of 13. Soon a report of high winds came from the seaplane.

Then no more reports came in. All radio contact was lost. The rescue plane had vanished too.

It was a clear spring-like day in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The time was December 5, 1945. The day was calm and cloudless. Only a light wind was blowing from the northeast- perfect weather for flying. World War 2 was over. America was slowly returning to a more normal life.

But on this day something very strange was to happen. At first, the mystery would hardly be noticed. Later, only a few questions would be raised. But, within 30 years, many would call this even the “most mysterious in the history of flying.” What happened would be the first in a long chain of events in the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle.

Lieutenant Charles Taylor of the Unity Stats Navy was used to being a flight leader. He had over 2,500 hours of flying time to his credit. That December day Taylor was given command of Flight 19/ The job seemed very simple. 5 avenger bombers were to go on a training flight.

The 5 planes would carry a crew of 14. Normally, there would have been 15 in the crew. But Corporal Allan Kosnar did not report for the flight. He had asked not to go on this flight mission. He received permission to stay on the ground. Later, Corporal Kosnar would say, “I can’t explain why. But for some strange reason I decided not to go on the flight that day” Had Corporal Kosnar been warned? Had he known what was going to happen?

Lieutenant Taylor had also asked not to go on this flight. Permission had been denied. Had Taylor also been warned? The flight 19 recorded. How ever, reported a fill crew. Mysteriously, they recorded 15 flyers. Had someone climbed aboard at the last minute? Who was this person? Or was the report of 15 flyers just a simple mistake? The Flight was to take about two hours. Each plane had enough fuel for 1,000 miles. A careful check of all the planes was made before take-off. Life rafts were placed on board.

The flyers were prepared for all emergencies. Or were they? At 2 P.M, the first plane lifted off into the clear, blue sky. By 2:10 P.M all of the planes were in the air. At first everything went well.
